Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay lived with her aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to become creative and inspired by the arts. Her aunt was a registered nurse who was a night shift worker so that she could commit her time to writing, reading or theater as well as other activities. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of her social status and taught that she could express her thoughts through the arts. While DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights protest over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma was the inspiration she used to produce a film on The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay was a student at University of California Los Angeles when she graduated, where she was awarded degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing content for broadcast journalism while she was in school. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given the responsibility of looking over the family home, and then looking through the rubbish of one jurors. Following her disappointment with journalism and the jobs that she was assigned, the journalist determined to make a move in the field of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a PR professional in the small studio that she worked in following her college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also launched several marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
